Doing What is Good!

“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do what is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.” (Titus 3:1-2)

If you want to write a message to a person very dear to you, you will be so keen to write to him not only warm greetings, not only wishes, but also words that build him up. Words that if he follows he will prosper, his life will be meaningful, peaceful, joyous and fruitful.

God also wrote to His children. His children are those who believed in Jesus and accepted Him as their personal Savior and Lord. The Bible tells us that, You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26) And in another passage it says, “Yet to all who receive Him, to those who believe in His name, He gave the right to become the children of God.” (John 1:12)

After we come to know Jesus and what He had done for us on the cross, and after we believed in Him our names are written in heaven. But while we are still here on earth, waiting on the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, God put in our hands His word that is written in the Bible to teach us, to correct us and to train us how to do good work and how to live a life that glorifies God. The word of God in this message directly remind us:

1.      To be subject to rulers and authorities: Being the people of God and having eternal life, our names are written in heaven and we will live with God forever. But that does not give us the right to be proud, arrogant, and abusive. Being a child of God we are privileged but we ought not to be rebellious against rulers and authorities. We find people rallying in the streets claiming their dues, and they are forcing the government to give them their rights by force. Another group of people we find them doing strike and stopping others to do work, but this way or behavior should not be the case with the people of God. Our Master and our King, the Lord Jesus Christ is in heaven. He is the One who provides for us our living and supplying all our needs. He is the One who brings us Justice and He returns to us what is due for us.

Jesus said, “If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” (Matthew 5:41) Jesus knows that there are rules difficult for man to bear with, but He still wants us to be gentle, patient and preserving in trials and troubles. If we try to use power and strength to get our rights from others we are away from God and we nullify the presence of the Lord Jesus. Justice will not come by our own strength, but from Him who judges justly.

2.      To be obedient: There are rules and systems arranging the work in different fields of life. Our attitude should be obedient rather than lawbreaker. In the Bible as we read the word of God we come across God’s law and we find ourselves short from some of them; we need not to reject these laws; we ought to correct ourselves and to be in line with His word applying faithfully in our lives, in order to live a life pleasant to God.

3.      To be ready to do what is good: To fulfill God’s laws, it is not enough to live a routine life; eat, drink and sleep. We have to understand and we need to serve God. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepare in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

4.      To slander no one: The people of God should not gossip or speak at the back of others. If you want to tell anything about anyone you go to him and speak to him face to face and not to speak behind. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31)

5.      To be peaceable: Aim for peace with your own family, neighbors, friends, relatives, and as well as with all the people around you. The word of God said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

6.      To be considerate: Sometimes we expect too much from the people around us. In fact, maybe themselves they want to give more but their situation hinders them or maybe certain circumstances not allow them. We ought to consider everyone especially the weak, the widows, the orphans, the jobless, those who loss their beloveds, etc. they are human and every one of them need special care from us.

7.      To show true humility towards all men: It is easy and usual to be humble and to behave towards those who are strong and those in authorities. But we have to behave in humility to those who are weak and poor, and those who are under us.

My dear and beloved: “This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to do what is good. These things are excellent and profitable to everyone.” (Titus 3:8) These are things that we should learn to do as we agree to pray.

My Prayer: “Heavenly Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus who died for me on the cross to give me eternal life. Oh Lord, today I dedicate myself to be a good example by doing good things that I come to know and learn from You. Thank you, Lord. This is my prayer in Jesus name, Amen.”
